Better geographic matchmaking

I would like to see a "same continent' slider to matchmaking priorities.
While I would love to meet people from across the globe, matching with someone from a different continent might be difficult time zone-wise.

The solution we are leaning towards is
optionally
providing your precise geolocation (which will be private) and displaying people's approximate
distance (km/mi) from you on their profiles. We will likely also have an option to list your timezone on your profile and see the time difference on people's profiles. Or maybe your schedule as suggested by zig13.

Timezone would definitely be an improvement over the current system which seems to only consider your own country. However people in the same timezone don't necessarily have the same sleep schedule.
If you could pair "when active" with timezone then it could see who overlaps with you. I am most likely to be active 19:00-22:00 BST, but it seems like a lot of peeps don't get on till closer to midnight and then are active till early hours.

zig13: I like this idea and I think it could work with a single daily active range like 19:00-22:00, but a lot of people's schedules are more complicated with multiple ranges in a day, or different schedules on different days of the week, or varying schedules week to week. If we limit this to a single range, some people will be left out (I wonder how many), but if we allow multiple ranges this may be too difficult to input and read on profiles. We could also ask for a single range of hours you're typically
awake
rather than active
, which might be more consistent but not quite as useful. Curious to hear what other people think about this!Kyle Farwell

We are thinking about ways to improve geographic matchmaking. This might look like continent/region grouping, timezones, more precise geolocation distance matchmaking, or some combination of these. We want to make sure this works well for (1) people in small countries with lots of neighbours (2) large spread-out countries (3) people that don't mind long-distance and (4) people that don't want to share their precise location for privacy reasons. It might take some time to get this right, but we'll see what we can do!
